Home Economics Centennial

The 100th anniversary of home economics education at Washington State University will be observed Sept. 25‚27. Home economics course work began at the State College of Washington when the Department of Domestic Economy was established in 1903.

Gertrude McKay was the first graduate. She received a bachelor of science degree in 1906. The College of Home Economics was established in June, 1916. It was one of the first colleges of home economics in the United States.

On Oct. 15, 1982, the colleges of agriculture and home economics were merged into the College of Agriculture and Home Economics.
