How to replace
files (Word, PDF, etc.) with Contribute 3
This is one of the shortcomings of Contribute: The replacement of
existing non-HTML files can be confusing and difficult. If you do
it wrong, you will have multiple versions, with multiple file names,
on the server. Follow these instructions!
Note that a profile needs to be able to delete files to replace them.
In the profile settings under Folder/File Access, you need to check ”Allow
users to delete files they have permission to edit.”
The Contribute Start Page has a Tutorial. If
you haven't been through it, do the tutorial before asking for
support.
If you are locked out of a page (can't edit),
- Is it checked out by someone else? Contact
that person and ask them to check it in.
- Does Contribute say that it is checked out by you? If
you were editing on another computer, go to that computer and
check it in. If not, seek help from someone with direct server
access so they can check in the file.

Note: This
tip applies to Contribute 3. Adobe Contribute 4 works much more
nicely. In Contribute 4, just select your link again, go to link
the file from your computer (make sure file name is the same),
and when you publish, Contribute will ask if you want to replace
the file with your current version, or publish your file using
a similar file name.
If
you try to link to a file on your computer that has a different
name than the original linked file, Contribute 4 will upload the
new file to the server. The old file will remain on the server, and
there still may be other links/bookmarks/search engine indexes
that point to the old file. |
