Macromedia
Dreamweaver MX: Foundation I
Comments on the WSU Online Learning
training module
Expected
duration: 300 minutes (5 hours)
The Using
Basic Dreamweaver MX Tools section gives a good, brief
overview of HTML and Web pages for non-technical individuals.
This
lesson uses the MX workspace (interface), which
is different than the Dreamweaver 4 workspace that I have recommended
in the past. While I find the Dreamweaver 4 workspace better,
people taking this lesson might want to stick to the MX workspace.
Lesson
shows use of the Preview/Debug button, which
would not be used by most WSU employees. It would only be used
by those with a staging server, probably for dynamic (e.g., database
driven) Web sites.
A good supplement to their lesson on Defining a Local
Site would be the Web Tip on How
to Configure Dreamweaver FTP.
The lesson periodically gives helpful, brief glimpses of HTML
code, so the trainee can see what is happening behind
the scenes.
The section on Anchors is rather brief. In my
trainings, this has been an area that caused considerable confusion,
and required frequent intervention and repetition. I think more
review/reinforcement would be helpful here.
The section on using Macromedia Fireworks to
edit graphics is only useful if the Trainee has Fireworks installed
on the computer. Round-trip graphics editing is not possible (as
of July 2005) without Fireworks.
Most people can skip the part on Flash. I do
not recommend the use of the Flash options.
