How to Configure Dreamweaver FTP

If you are using Dreamweaver for Web design, but are using another program to upload files to your site, you are working harder than you need to.

When using CuteFTP, WS_FTP, or another FTP program, it is easy to accidentally upload files to the wrong directory, if you don't align your local folder with your server folder. When you have defined a site in Dreamweaver, however, Dreamweaver will automatically upload your files to the correct folder. Just select the file, where ever it is in your site, and click the upload button in the tool bar.

So how do you configure Dreamweaver's FTP client?

Select Define Sites in your site menuGo into your Site Definitions, select your site and click "Edit."

Note: You need to have your site defined in Dreamweaver to take advantage of Dreamweaver's FTP capabilities. See your documentation, if necessary.

In your Site Definition dialog box, change from "Local Info" to "Remote Info."
Change your access from "None" to "FTP."

Configure your remote info

You will receive information for "FTP Host" and "Host Directory" from your server administrator.

Your "Login" for a CAHE Information Department server follows the above scheme: It will typically start with the word "cahe" followed by a backslash and then your network log-in (not to be confused with your email ID, which may be different). If you are not using a CAHE Information Department server, check with your server administrator for your log-in.

"Password" is generally your network password, or another password provided by your server administrator. This is not necessarily the same as your email password.

If you are behind a firewall (such as on a county server), you will need to talk to your firewall administrator about the settings "Use Passive FTP" and "Use Firewall (in Preferences)."

Check In/Out is typically used when a number of people will be maintaining a Web site, and you don't want to overwrite another person's changes. If you are the only person maintaining your Web pages, leave this unchecked. If two or more people are maintaining the Web site, you should only use this if everyone on the team is using Dreamweaver FTP Check In/Out.
